George Stephen Morrison, Andrew Lee’s father, was a United States Navy rear admiral and naval aviator. Morrison commanded US naval forces during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in August 1964, which precipitated an increase in American involvement in the Vietnam War.
Andrew Lee was the family’s youngest member. Jerry Hopkins recorded Andrew Lee explaining that his parents had decided never to use physical corporal punishment on their children, such as spanking. Instead, they used the military tradition known as “dressing down” to instill discipline and impose punishment. This entailed yelling and berating the children until they burst into tears and admitted their shortcomings.
After graduating from UCLA, Andrew Lee Morrison’s brother Jim cut off most contact with his family. Morrison had been out of touch with his family for over a year by the time his music reached the top of the charts (in 1967) and falsely claimed that his parents and siblings had died (or, as has been widely misreported, that he was an only child). In a 1969 interview with Rolling Stone magazine’s Jerry Hopkins, Jim explained that he did this because he did not want to involve his family in his musical career.
This error was included in the materials distributed with the Doors’ self-titled debut album. Admiral Morrison was not pleased with his son’s decision to pursue a musical career. One day, a friend brought over a record that was thought to feature Jim on the cover. It was the Doors’ self-titled debut album.
Morrison’s father and family were present when the young man played the record. Their father wrote Jim a letter after hearing the record, telling him “to give up any idea of singing or any connection with a music group because of what I consider to be a complete lack of talent in this direction.”
Andrew Lee Morrison’s father acknowledged the breakdown in family communications in a letter to the Florida Probation and Parole Commission District Office dated October 2, 1970, as the result of an argument over his assessment of his son’s musical talents. He said he could understand his son’s reluctance to initiate contact and that he was proud of him.
Throughout the band’s career, Andrew Lee Morrison’s brother Jim struggled with alcoholism, which affected his stage performances at times.Jim died unexpectedly in Paris in 1971, at the age of 27, amid conflicting witness accounts. Because of his untimely death, he became a member of the infamous 27 club. Anne Morrison, Andrew Lee’s sister, assisted in turning Jim’s work into a book.
The cause of Jim Morrison’s death is unknown because no autopsy was performed.Despite the fact that the Doors recorded two more albums after Jim Morrison died, his death had a negative impact on the band’s fortunes, and they split up two years later.
