He refused his doctors’ advice to have his toe amputated, and despite his illness, he continued touring and was planning a 1980 world tour. He was fighting cancer, and his health was deteriorating. His cancer had spread all over his body.

Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36, from melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain. On May 21, 1981, he was given a state funeral in Jamaica. His funeral service incorporated elements of both Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. He was buried with his guitar in a chapel near his birthplace.
