Turner died of a cocaine overdose on January 16, 2008, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. “Cocaine toxicity with other significant conditions, such as hypertensive cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema, is the cause of death for Ike Turner,” Supervising Medical Examiner Investigator Paul Parker told CNN. His daughter Mia was said to be surprised by the coroner’s verdict, believing that his advanced stage emphysema played a larger role.

Ike Melby, Twanna Turner Melby’s father, died without a valid will. His former wife Audrey Madison Turner filed a petition less than a week after his death, claiming that he had written a handwritten will naming her as a beneficiary. A judge ruled in 2009 that Turner’s handwritten will was invalid and that his children were the legal heirs to his estate.
